The Office of the Corporation Counsel (OCC) enforces the District's consumer protection and antitrust laws. It brings court actions to stop deceptive, anticompetitive, or unconscionable business practices and to obtain compensation for consumers. Although this office does not represent individual consumers, it uses complaint information it receives to determine whether there is a pattern or practice by a business that warrants investigation or possible legal action by OCC.
Beginning July 7, 2003, District of Columbia residents can also register in the National Do Not Call Registry by calling 1 (888) 382-1222 (TTY: 1 (866) 290-4236).
Most telemarketers cannot call your telephone number if it is in the National Do Not Call Registry. Registration is free. You must have a valid email address to register on the website, since a notification will be sent to you via email asking for you to respond within 72 hours of when the message is sent to you, confirming the telephone numbers you want placed on the list. If you do not respond within that time frame, the designated telephone numbers will not be placed on the list. Consumers without an email address can register by phone.
