Court Imposes Preliminary Injunction on Moving and Storage Company

(WASHINGTON, DC) On February 13, 2002, the District of Columbia Office of the Corporation Counsel (OCC) filed a lawsuit against MY Enterprises, doing business as University Storage and Moving, Inc., and its owner, Melvin Yates. The OCC charged that the defendants violated the law by enticing consumers into using their moving and storage services by providing low estimates that they subsequently failed to honor. University Moving and Storage allegedly sprang new fees on consumers after they already had possession of the consumers' goods. In some cases, they refused to return the consumers' goods unless they paid these new and higher rates. Consumers also complained to OCC about the loss and damage of their goods. According to the lawsuit, University Moving and Storage ignored consumers' complaints and refused to compensate consumers for their losses.

On February 26, 200, the DC Superior Court entered a preliminary injunction against the defendants that orders them to stop their deceptive practices, preserve their records, and obtain a surety bond in the amount of $100,000 for the benefit of any District of Columbia consumers injured by the defendants' deceptive practices in the future.
